Introducing the KDE Desktop 76 Getting Started Guide NOTE: To rearrange the icons on the Panel, right-click your mouse pointer on a Panel icon. Choose Move from the pop- up menu, then slide your mouse from side to side and click when the icon is positioned where you’d like it. (You can cover up other icons if you’re not careful). CAUTION: If you’re using a low screen resolution, such as we have used for most of the screen shots in this manual, you may not see all of the default Panel icons. You can always access the same functions from the main menu. In addition to the application icons on the Panel, the Panel can include tiny win- dows for applications that you want to have visible at all times. For example, if you start the audio CD Player by choosing Multimedia|CD Player, the Panel always shows a small CD icon that you can use to access the CD Player. Using Multiple Desktops Often you have many applications open at the same time on your Desktop. Although you can use the Alt+Tab keys or the buttons on the Taskbar to switch between these open applications, it can still be challenging to keep your Desktop organized. KDE provides multiple Desktops (sometimes called virtual Desktops) so that you can place different applications on each Desktop, dividing your work into catego- ries that fit your needs. All of these Desktops are part of the same KDE session; they just make it easier to visually arrange a busy workspace. By default, KDE includes four Desktops. You can access these Desktops by Clicking a Desktop button on the Panel (they are named one, two, three, four) Pressing Ctrl+F1 for Desktop one, and so forth, through Ctrl+F4 for Desktop four. When you return to a Desktop, all of the applications windows remain as you left them when you switched to another Desktop. You can move application windows to any of the Desktops. You can also change the number and name of the KDE Desktops. To move an application window to a Desktop: 1. Open the Window Control menu by clicking on the left end of the window’s title bar. 2. Select the To Desktop item.
